National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS)

Directorate of Secondary Education, Assam has announced the official notification for Centrally Sponsored “National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS)" Scheme for the financial year 2022-23.

Students who are interested in building their Assam Career and eligible for these scholarship can apply online by following the steps given in this article.

About NMMS Scholarships


NMMS Scholarships are awarded to the gifted or meritorious students studying as regular students in class IX, X, XI and XII in a Government. Under NMMS Scholarships, 100,000 scholarships are awarded to the gifted or meritorious students whose parental income are not more than Rs.1,50,000/- per annum.

Eligibility Criteria of NMMS Scholarship


The minimum eligibility criteria to apply for NMMS Scholarship are as mentioned below

A. The awardees should get clear promotion from class VIII to Class IX for being eligible for scholarship.

B. Scholarships are awarded to the gifted or meritorious students whose parental income is not more than Rs.1,50,000/- per annum.

C. Students studying as regular students in class IX in a Government, Government-aided and local body schools which will be renewed for classes X, XI and XII. Thus the scholarships will be for a maximum period of four years.

Reservation (Category-wise)


  • SC: 15%
  • ST: 7.5%
  • PWD:  4%

NMMS Scholarship Assam Value


The amount of scholarship will be Rs.12,000/- per annum @ Rs.1000 per month.

For Continuance of Scholarship


Students should get minimum of 55% marks in Class IX and XI and 60% in Class X for continuance of scholarship (relaxable by 5% for SC/ST candidates) in next higher classes.

Who can't apply for NMMS Scholarship?


Following category of students can't apply for NMMS Scholarship:

  • No scholarship shall be available for studies abroad for any course.
  • No claim for scholarship arrears will be entertained after the expiry of 12 months of the academic session for which one has applied for the claim.
  • In case any awardee leaves his/her course of study within one month of registration/admission, no scholarship shall be paid to him/her.
  • The awardee must join the next class/desired course within 3 months of the declaration of the result of the previous class/course.
  • Scholarship shall be deemed to be discontinued with any gap of one academic session in studies at any time due to any reason.
  • Scholarship once discontinued on the basis of the rules of disbursement of scholarship cannot be revived under any circumstances.

Selection Process of NMMS Scholarship\


A. The students must pass both the tests i.e. MAT and SAT with at least 40 % marks in aggregate taken together for these two tests. For the SC/ST students, this cut off will be 32% marks.

B. Student must have scored at least 55% mark or equivalent grade in Class VIII examination. There will be 5 % relaxation for SC/ST students.

C. The awardees should satisfy the eligibilities and the conditions mentioned above (Eligibility Criteria)

Rules to Receive payment of Scholarship


  • A student can avail only one Scholarship under any scheme.
  • The awardees will be required to open bank accounts preferably in SBI, or any public sector bank or any scheduled bank which has core banking facility.

2. Click on "Next"

3. On the next page, fill your all personal and educational details.

4. Upload necessary documents.

5. Submit the form.

NOTE: The application process of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) has been made ONLINE. Students have to download the ‘Bidyarthi’ app from the Play store of Android phone.

  • Scanned copy of Candidate's Photograph.
  • Scanned copy of Candidate's Signature.
  • Scanned copy of Candidate's Caste certificate (Only for OBC, SC and ST candidates)
  • Scanned copy of Candidate's Disability certificate (Disabled candidates).

NMMS Scholarship Examination Summery


1) A written examination of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) will be held on 18th December 2020

2) The question paper will be in both Assamese & English medium. The OMR sheet will be in English medium.

3) You can get Previous 2 years' question papers are available in the 'Bidyarthi' app at Google Play Store.

4) Children with disability will be given extra time, as applicable.

5) There are two papers: Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

For selecting the students, the following conditions may apply:
