About GMCH, Guwahati
Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, the second medical college in Assam, is also a health facility. Provides medical education at the bachelor, master, and postgraduate level.
The doctor, John Perry White, MRCS, surgeon with the British East India Company, pioneered health education and health services in Assam. From 1898 to 1899 he founded the 'Berry White Medical School' at Dibrugarh, Assam. The school was modernized and on November 3, 1947, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, was the first medical college in Assam.
As the demand for health care and health education increased, there was a need for more medical colleges in Assam. The state government was headed in 1959 by Mr. B. P. Chaliha, the chief minister of Assam. The Minister of Finance Mr. Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed and the Minister of Medicine of Assam, Rupnath Brahma, have decided to build a second medical university in Assam. This is how GMCH came to be.
